Helga Arrives on Christmas Eve

Well, you could have knocked me over with a spoon when Jimmy brought Helga upstairs to share Christmas with me. I would never ever have thought that we would meet again under such delightful circumstances.

I first ran across Helga years ago in a news article about one of my favorite artists, Andrew Wyeth. It appears he secretly painted a neighbor of his over and over again, in different poses from nude to clothed, in everyday activities to sleep.

If you know anything about Andrew Wyeth, you know that he paints in excruciating detail. His work is so realistic that a photograph pales in comparison. If you look at the detail of his art, you can only wonder at how much his eye sees and how much of that he can put on canvas. I really love his paintings.

So now we come back to Helga. I came across her most recently at the flea market. Dolly, one of the managers, had brought in her weekly batch of things to sell. I noticed she had a good-sized painting among her acquisitions. I took a closer look and literally blurted out, "It's HELGA!"

Dolly gave me a look... "Who? What are you talking about!" She had no idea who Helga was; who Andrew Wyeth was. I explained what I knew about Helga and the artist and showed her the detail in the painting. She didn't particularily care for the painting and wanted me to buy it since I was so taken with it. Well, I couldn't afford to buy it even though Dolly offered me an excellent price for it. And thus the matter stood.

Not long afterwards, the painting disappeared. Dolly told me she had taken it out to her truck and then eventually sold it. I was happy about that because only a certain kind of person would like it and I felt that a Wyeth lover had probably bought it.

Fast forward to Christmas Eve. It's Jimmy's turn to pass out his gifts. His gift to me was too big to wrap, he said. So I had to close my eyes and wait for him to bring it upstairs from its hiding place in the basement behind a stack of wood.

At his signal, I opened my eyes and there was Helga in all her glory! What a surprise! I love it!
