Spiders, Snakes, Elephants and a Ride on the Metro!

What do spiders, snakes and elephants have to do with the Metro? Well, last Saturday, I enjoyed a day at the Washington Zoo with Ricky and Nicholas. Sue had a law seminar to attend at the Smithsonian so we piled into her car and off we went early Saturday morning, heading for DC. We parked the car in Springfield and caught the Metro into Washington. With day passes, we could stop and go with ease.

After escorting Sue to her seminar, we boarded the Metro again; this time for the zoo. After a rainy start out of Richmond, by mid-morning, the weather was beautiful. Who knows how many miles we walked... I know the list of animals we saw was long. Spiders and snakes that made me shiver; elephants and cute pandas, monkeys of various sorts, tiny animals that hid in their habitats; giraffes, turtles and cats; and many more... We missed some of the exhibits because we had to return to the Mall in time to go on the 2 p.m. tour of the Washington Monument. Another Metro ride and another long walk and we arrived at the Monument. When it was our turn, we got in the elevator and up we went to the sightseers' area with the viewing windows where we had a gorgeous view of the city with all its monuments, the Tidal Basin, the Reflecting Pool, the Potomac, the important buildings and the people walking along far below us.

By this time, we were getting pretty tired from all our galivanting around, so we sat for awhile in the Sculpture Garden near the Mall. The weather was turning colder too and the wind was blowing harder. I was so glad I had worn my winter coat because I stayed warm the whole afternoon. As time for the end of the seminar approached, we walked over to where Sue would be coming out. It had gotten too cold to sit outside to wait so we went inside where it was warm and that's where we met Sue after her seminar ended.

And now to dinner! Back to the Metro for the trip to Chinatown where we admired the big arch that defined the entrance to Chinatown. Nearby was a Spanish tapas restaurant where we ordered from a menu of small portions of meats and veggies. An interesting eating concept where we could sample a number of different foods. Yummy!

Afterwards, we took the Metro back to Springfield, retrieved our car and headed home. I had a wonderful time; and so did everyone else!
