A Picnic at the Governor's Mansion

We, the members of St. Elizabeth Church, are very proud to have one of our own in the Governor's Mansion. Tim and Anne Kaine have been members here for about 17 or 18 years; actually since Tim arrived in Richmond. They were married at St. Elizabeth's and their children baptized there; and since then, they have been actively involved in parish life.
Needless to say, we have followed Tim's political career with interest and many of our parishioners have worked on his campaigns in various capacities.
As preparations for his Inaugural began, Tim asked to speak to the Church one Sunday and surprised us all by inviting the St. Elizabeth Gospel Choir to sing at the interdenominational prayer service the morning of his Inauguration. The entire congregation gave him a standing ovation! Tim had once been a member of the choir and had occasionally sung with us even after his commitments made it impossible for him to remain an active member; so the choir was dear to his heart.
Anne also had a surprise for us. She told the Church that once life had settled down at the Governor's Mansion, there would be a special opportunity for all of us to visit. She was inviting the Church to a picnic on the grounds of the Mansion! The picnic was scheduled for June 4, 2006. There were special invitations sent to each of us and because of security issues, all who were to attend were placed on a master list.
The big day finally arrived. Security checked us off at the gate and the private gardens and the terrace were opened to us. The tables were spread with picnic foods; and the host and hostess welcomed us to their home. We were also invited to tour the first floor of the mansion where a volunteer was available to explain the history of the Mansion and its contents. We had a wonderful time. Tim and Anne and their children made every effort to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. Pictures were taken and Tim found himself the center of many a group photograph. Jimmy reminded him this was all part of his duties as Governor! :)
It was a memorable day and one we won't soon forget.
