And So, a Few Weeks Later...

... and that guy with the nice smile who ate lunch with me almost every day had still not asked me for a date! What was going on here anyway? We were good friends by now and found out we had a lot in common. We laughed and joked and insulted each other... Talked about philosophy; our strange professors... talked about books we were reading; built strange contraptions out of straws and toothpicks... but something was obviously wrong. Why didn't he ask me out???

I consulted with my best friend, Norma... "He really likes you," she said.

"Then WHY?," I replied. "What's he waiting for? If he doesn't ask me out soon, I'm going to give up!"

I had a Saturday class that semester, so one Saturday at lunchtime, that guy with the nice smile and I were having lunch when Amir Pishdad, an Iranian exchange student and one of our mutual friends came by our table.

"Well, have you asked her yet?" Pish said as he spoke to that guy with the nice smile.

"Ah.... no." My guy wasn't smiling now. Actually he was embarrassed. And you know why? Pish had arranged for his American girlfriend and him to double date with us that evening! The guy with the nice smile was supposed to have asked me out!!!

"Well, aren't you going to ask her?" Pish was determined not to let my guy off the hook!

"Do you want to go out this evening?" asked the guy with the nice smile.

I must have been grinning by then. "Yes!"

So, that evening we had our first date. I think we went to a movie. Amir Pishdad was the only one of us students with a car, a Studebaker. So, he and his girlfriend picked up my guy and then drove to my parents' home; picked me up and off we went to the movies!

And what took so long for that guy with the nice smile to ask me out? Well, he had just been dumped by his previous girlfriend, a young girl who lived out at St. Joseph's Villa. He was not looking for any entanglements. He had sworn off girls when I came on the scene.

Well, I was happy. I had no more doubts that we could be more than just friends. This was the beginning of many more times together. Many of those dates took place at my house, since your Dad had hardly any money to spend. He would have to take the bus from RPI (VCU) to Highland Park and then have enough bus fare to get back to the Fan where he lived in an apartment with some other guys.

Oma and Opa were a little unsure about our relationship. Opa had always wanted me to marry someone within their German group of friends. None of those eligible boys were interesting to me, though I had a date or two with a couple of them. They were nice enough but they were boring to me. None of them challenged me with the kinds of conversations that the boy with the nice smile and I were having every day.

So that was the beginning...

It was something about how those crooked teeth were arranged that made it a real person's smile. And of course, Jimmy is right too! That goofy grin that y'all get when you are in luv...
